Roger Federer has won a sixth title in Halle after beating unseeded Mikhail Youzhny in the final today.
It looked as though a surprise could be on the cards as Youzhny won a first set tiebreak 7-5 to lead by a set. Federer responded, growing in confidence as set two progressed, and took the second set 6-3 and then the decider 6-4 – taking the match 6-7 6-3 6-2 to win the Gary Weber Open.
It’s Roger’s 77th title, an incredible feat. He now has the same amount of singles titles as John McEnroe but has a long way to equal Jimmy Connors’ 109 singles titles.
This victory sends out a bold statement to his fellow Wimbledon contenders. I believe the Swiss is certainly capable of another Slam and that Wimbledon is his best chance, Federer on grass is a great combination. But this year it’ll be as tough as ever for the reigning SW19 champion, Nadal, Djokovic and Murray continue to raise the bar.
Yeeeaaahhhh, I am so happy winning the title in Halle. Thanks for all your support pic.twitter.com/5OpYowsCjr
