The Battle of Spain

In the 60th Barcelona Open Banc Sandabell the clay courts play host to three Spaniards who will effectively be battling it out for the title on their. Top seeded David Ferrer has finished a Nadal’s runner-up four time and has a 25-10 win-loss record at the ATP 500. Second, Nadal has won it seven times. He has a 34 match consecutive winning record at the tournament and has won it on all but one occasion since 2005. Fourth seeded Nicholas Almagro also has a good chance of winning his third ATP 500. He may be the fourth seed, but has more experience on clay than third seeded Tomas Berdych. You would think that, but when they met in Rome last year on clay, it was the Czech who prevailed , and Berdych is ranked six places higher than Almagro currently, so who knows?

It hasn’t gone as expected though, as David Ferrer crashed out in his opening round – the second – to Russian Dmitry Tursunov in a mad three setter. Tursunov was part of the beaten GB team in the Davis Cup. Therefore, does that mean the Britain could beat Spain in the Davis Cup? Madness!

All the other top seeded players have been alright in the second round:

  • Nadal beat Berlocq 6-4, 6-2 and faces Paire next.
  • Berdych beat Davydenko 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 and faces Robredo next.
  • Almagro beat Dodig 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2 and faces Granollers next.
  •  Raonic beat Roger-Vasselin 6-4, 6-2 and faces Gulbis next.
