Pick an Olympic Medalist to win in Basel

After losing the Shanghai Masters final to Novak Djokovic, TPFTennis takes a look at Andy’s upcoming events.

Next up for the US Open champion is the Swiss Indoor event in Basel. The event is played on indoor hard courts and is worth 500 ATP points and almost 338,000 euros for the champion. The top eight seeds are Federer, Murray, Del Potro, Gasquet, Nishikori, Wawrinka, Mayer and Baghdatis. Meaning, if Djokovic wants to stay within grasp of being the ATP No.1 ranked player, he’ll have to hope Federer doesn’t do well. All the 25 players competing are in the ATP top 54, so we’ll definitely see some high quality tennis!

Roger Federer is the most successful player of the tournament, winning it five times. After all it is his home event and when he was a teenager he was a ball boy there! Djokovic also broke into the middle of Federer’s spell with a win in 2009. Nevertheless, the year before last, Federer was given ‘The History Award,’ for being ‘the tournement’s best ever player.’

Last year, Andy Murray was forced to withdraw through injury, even though he was second seed, and didn’t compete in the 2010 event.
