Murray V Karlovic – Japanese Open – Round 1

A lucky escape for Andy Murray? The Brit faced a lucky loser after Gael Monfils was forced to retire due to injury. Last time he played the Frenchman, Monfils beat Murray 6-2, 2-6, 6-3. Nevertheless that was two years ago at the last ATP Masters 1000 of the season on the hard courts of Paris.

However, having played and beat world No.79 Ivo Karlovic four times before, he was no match for Murray, as he again beat him in straight sets. But it wasn’t easy running, where both sets were very serve dominated and, even though Murray had three set points in the first set for Murray, it still went to a tie-break at 7-6. The Scot went on to win the tie-break 9-7. The second and final set was also very serve dominated but, after two more match points he won it 6-4.

What next? In the second round he plays Slovakian Lukas Lacko who completely destroyed his first round opponent 6-0, 6-2.
